A conversation with our Youth Group Leader, Shonna Scott-Silva

Q1) How does your Christianity influence how you lead the youth group?
I grew up in this church and I got to experience so much. I enjoyed church school,
christian camp, vbs, youth group, confirmation, choir. Now I get to continue to expand my
journey and share all that I have learned and continue to learn myself as a Sunday School
teacher/ Mentor of God’s love, nominating committee, Assistant Church School Superintendent,
Assistant Treasurer and now youth group coordinator.
I want my children to be able to experience the same as I did when younger, and
develop the same appreciation and understanding of God’s love.
Q2) How did the church influence you in your youth?
The church was a huge influence when I was young. Every memory that I have of
growing up in this church, I can say was fun and memorable. There was always missions work
that was being done as well, so on top of having fun we got to learn a valuable lesson and help.
To recall a few of those mission memories were the sister church in Chile, the heifer project, the
scavenger hunt to fill the food pantry, and many more.
Trips to go skiing, Rock-a-thons, yankee swaps, dressing up up like clowns and visiting
the nursing homes, caroling for the shut-ins… there was always something to do and I always
looked forward to doing it , and so did my friends. Fun times, Mission work and a safe
environment where all were welcome.
Q3) In what ways will you use the gifts, talents and abilities the God gave you?
God gave me many talents, but the most important one to remember is “we are all
precious children of God”. With that being said, that means everyone likes to have fun. Being
creative with crafts, giggling with games, singing silly songs, masterminding missions work and
more. I am still a kid at heart, if I get bored that means the children will too. We as a church
have to keep up with the times and make the education seem fun and not like a lecture, then the
children will thrive.
Q4) What is your personal vision for the youth group ministry here at Second church?
My personal vision for the youth group is to get the youth more involved and bring OUR
church, and the churches in the community together as “One big Family of Faith”.
Q5) What are your plans for the youth group?
My plans are to meet a twice a month, we will do fun games and mission work and be
out in the community spreading God’s love.
